Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Liam Aylward

Question:

340 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education the reason a student (details supplied) in County Kilkenny is liable for tuition fees. [1168/97]

Under the regulations governing the middle level technician and higher technical and business skills programme funded by the Department of Education and the European Social Fund a person who has completed more than year one of a degree level course is not eligible to have tuition fees paid in respect of attendance on a national certificate or national diploma course.

I understand from Galway regional technical college that the student in question has previously pursued two years of a BSc. degree course in applied computing at Waterford regional technical college, therefore he is ineligible for funding for his computing course at the Castlebar campus of Galway regional technical college.

Liam Aylward

Question:

341 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education if any grant or assistance is available from her Department to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny who was assured by a local council in Scotland that they would fund him to undertake a one-year course in golf management at Fyffe, Scotland, but who may be refused on a technicality. [1169/97]

Grants under the higher education grants scheme and the vocational education committee scholarship schemes are payable to eligible students in respect of attendance on approved undergraduate courses, which are defined to mean full-time undergraduate courses of at least two years duration.

As the course in question is a one year course it is not an approved course and accordingly, the person concerned is ineligible for student support.

Joe Walsh

Question:

342 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Education if she will have arrangements made to pay a higher education grant to a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [1170/97]

Cork County Council is the relevant body statutorily entrusted with the administration of the higher education grants scheme.

I understand from Cork County Council that the student in question qualifies for a full maintenance grant, payable at the non-adjacent rate.

Michael Creed

Question:

343 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if a person (details supplied) in County Cork will be paid a higher education grant; and if so, the current position relating to his application. [1171/97]

I understand that the person in question applied for a vocational education committee scholarship to County Cork vocational education committee. The vocational education committee refused the application on the basis that the course being pursued by the applicant is a further education course which is not covered by the vocational education committee scholarship scheme.
