Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - Provision of Swimming Pool.

Liam Fitzgerald

Question:

350 Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education if she has received a submission (details supplied) from the Dublin International Sports Council, dated 9 December 1996, in relation to the need for an aquatic centre and 50 metre pool; if she will recommend the provision of such a facility; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1251/97]

Liam Aylward

Question:

399 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education the number and details of proposals received in the sports section of her Department; if any further progress has been made towards the provision of a 50-metre pool; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1780/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 350 and 399 together.

My Department has received four separate proposals for the provision of a 50-metre pool including the submission from the Dublin International Sports Council. These proposals differ in terms of the type of 50-metre pool, the range and scale of ancillary facilities and the estimated costs involved.

As I have outlined in replies to previous parliamentary questions the question of the provision of a 50-metre pool is being considered by the sports strategy group in the context of the future development and funding of sports facilities at national and community level.

Pending the publication of the sports strategy report, which I expect to be available by mid-February 1997, I am not in a position to give details of the progress of the project.
