Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - Gaelcholáiste Leamhcáin.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

375 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education the action, if any, she will take to ensure recognition of Gaelcholáiste Leamhcáin in view of the fact that 1997 will be the first year that past pupils of Gaelscoil Naomh Padraig in Palmerstown will be seeking enrolment at the gaelcholáiste; if the site for the gaelcholáiste was purchased which has been promised for six months and financial allocation for which was made in 1996. [1591/97]

An application has been received in my Department from County Dublin Vocational Education Committee requesting sanction to open the gaelcholáiste in temporary accommodation from September 1997. This application is under examination at present and a decision will be conveyed to the committee as soon as possible.

My Department's post-primary building unit has arrangements in hand to meet with the Vocational Education Committee and its design team in early February, in order to initiate a detailed investigation of the proposed site. It appears that there are several very large surface water and foul pipes running across the site, two of which are under pressure, making it necessary to investigate the suitability of the site further for building purposes. Upon completion of the feasibility study, the building unit will then be in a position to consider the question of the site purchase.
