Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - Teaching Council.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

400 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education her views on the establishment of a teaching council which would be representative of all the interests in education and which would maintain, improve and implement codes of professional practice as well as deal with teacher qualification and conduct. [1781/97]

The White Paper gives a commitment to bringing forward proposals for a teaching council. As the White Paper states, the establishment of a teaching council requires careful examination of complex legal, constitutional and operational issues. In accordance with the conclusion in the report on the National Education Convention, I intend to examine these issues openly and comprehensively with the education partners with a view to agreement.
