Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Tony Gregory

Question:

434 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if the Garda or a former garda (details supplied) authorised passports for the two main suspects in a case (details supplied); and the action, if any, which is being taken on this matter. [1412/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that during the course of extensive investigations carried out into the murder of Veronica Guerin and associated matters, the activities of a former garda came to adverse notice. He stands remanded on a number of charges involving unlawful possession of a firearm and corruption. Furthermore, a file has been forwarded to the DPP for directions in relation to other possible charges. I am satisfied that it would be inappropriate for me to comment any further at this stage.
