Information on the full range of social welfare services is available through my Department's network of 60 local offices throughout the country. A clerical officer in each local office is normally assigned to information duties and is responsible for dealing with personal callers, telephone inquiries and correspondence.
Officers assigned to such duties advise and inform people in relation to specific claims or provide information of a more general nature. Apart from dealing with individual inquiries, information officers frequently provide information through seminars and presentations to local groups and organisations. Information officers also participate in local information campaigns and events in co-operation with other statutory and non-statutory agencies to heighten public awareness of welfare rights and entitlements to social services generally.
In addition to the network of local social welfare offices, there are two public offices in Dublin located near the city centre. These offices deal with a combined total of almost 50,000 callers per year and each has a staff of seven clerical officers working under the supervision of a staff officer.
Information on social welfare entitlements may also be obtained from other areas of the Department. These include jobs facilitators in each region assigned to advise and assist people in relation to employment supports such as the back-to-work allowance, family income supplement, education opportunities, etc.
