Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - Decentralisation Programme

Hugh Byrne

Question:

565 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry in relation to the planned move of his Department to Johnstown Castle, County Wexford, the number of staff, at each grade, in his Department who have applied to transfer to Wexford; the number at each grade who have applied from other Departments; the plans, if any, he has to recruit a full complement of staff; the timetable for same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1660/97]

Following the decision by the Government to decentralise 350 of my Department's staff to Johnstown Castle, County Wexford, an initial survey of all officers in the Department was carried out to ascertain the level of interest among staff in relocating to Wexford.

A total of 130 were willing to transfer in their current grade (see the following table).

A circular to all staff inviting applications from those who wish to transfer to Wexford on a permea manent basis is about to be issued. If there is a shortfall in numbers the Department of Finance will invite applications from Civil Service staff in other Government Departments or agencies.
In the event that the response is still inadequate to meet requirements, it may be necessary to arrange promotional competitions or direct recruitment via the Civil Service Commission, to fill the remaining positions.
Contracts for the Department offices to be constructed at Johnstown Castle are expected to be signed shortly.
