579 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the number and locations of wind energy projects, if any, which are currently being developed in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the use of wind energy. [25308/96]
The promotion of renewable energy, including wind energy, is a priority of the Government's overall energy policy. To date several support initiatives have been taken to encourage the exploitation of this resource. Under the first Alternative Energy Requirement, (AER1), which I announced in 1995, contracts for the construction of ten wind farms with a combined total electricity generation capacity of 73MW were offered. Details of the succesful AER1 projects are on tabular statement supplied. The commercial operation deadline date for all AER1 projects is 31 December 1997.
As a follow-on to the AER1 competition, I initiated a detailed review of renewable policy and support programmes. This led to the launch, in April 1996, of a new long-term support strategy under which I have set targets up to the year 2010. I have set a target of 90MW for wind energy up to the end of 1999 with further targets of 30MW per annum set for the post 1999 period. All capacity will be secured by competition, the first of which, (AERIII), I will launch shortly. AERIII will seek to secure 90MW of electricity generation capacity from wind energy systems before the end of 1999.
In addition, my strategy also guarantees electricity market access for EU Thermie funded renewable energy projects. Two Thermie funded wind farms are currently being developed, one in County Donegal, (3MW) and the other in County Roscommon, (5MW).
