Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dooriel (Mayo) Beach.

Michael Ring

Question:

599 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine if he will have investigations made into the matter of sand removed on an ongoing basis from a beach in the Dooriel area of Westport, County Mayo, in view of the fact that the problem has been brought to the attention of the council by residents on a number of occasions but nothing has been done. [1228/97]

There is a prohibitory order in existence in respect of the area concerned. This order, in force since 1981, prohibits the removal of beach material other than seaweed. Enforcement of the order is primarily a matter for Mayo County Council.

I will have the matter investigated in consultation with Mayo County Council and I will let the Deputy know the outcome.
