The information requested by the Deputy for the period 12 January 1990 — 3 February 1997 is set out in the following tabular statement. The majority of naval visits were at the request of the authorities of the visiting vessel for the purposes of routine or courtesy visits and for crew rest and recreation. Those visits that arose as a result of invitations by the Irish authorities are indicated by an asterisk and footnote in the statement.
Statistics requested by the Deputy in respect of the period January 1987 — December 1989 are contained in a reply by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of 3 July 1990 to a question by Deputy Tony Gregory. The information is available in the Official Report Vol. 400, col. 1880, 1990.
A list containing details of requests received so far for visits by foreign naval vessels to Ireland during the remaining part of 1997 is also set out in the following tabular statement. At present there are no plans to officially invite foreign naval vessels to Ireland during 1997.
