Vol. 474 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tax Yield.

Austin Deasy

Question:

31 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Finance the amount of excise duty the Government gets from a pint of stout, a pint of ale, a pint of lager, and a glass of spirits; and when the level of excise duties on these commodities was last increased. [4015/97]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the excise duty yield on a pint of stout, ale and lager is currently 37p, 34p and 38p respectively and on a glass of whiskey and vodka is 62p and 58p respectively. The level of excise duty on these commodities was last increased on 26 January, 1994.

The amounts shown are in respect of excise duty only. VAT is also charged at 21 per cent on alcoholic drink.
