Vol. 474 No. 8

Written Answers. - Maastricht Criteria.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

36 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance if he will participate in any decision to relax the Maastricht criteria in view of growing German unemployment and the uncertainty of the German Government regarding its ability to meet the criteria. [4010/97]

The European Council will meet in spring 1998 to decide which member states meet the conditions for adoption of the single currency, the euro. The criteria on which member states' fitness will be judged are set out in the Treaty on European Union and there are no proposals to change them.

The German Government has stated quite clearly its determination that Germany will meet the criteria.
