Written Answers. - Structural Funds.

John Ellis

Question:

103 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Finance the action, if any, he is taking to have objective 1 status continued in the north-west such as the counties of Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Cavan post-1999; and if he will make a statement on the action, if any, he is taking with regard to the retention of this status. [4267/97]

The Government is monitoring and will continue to monitor all aspects of Ireland's position in relation to eligibility for Structural Funds post 1999 including whether classification of Ireland as one region for Structural Funds purposes continues to be the best policy. The Deputy can be assured that this Government is developing a strategy for the forthcoming negotiations for the renewal of the Structural Funds post-1999, which will ensure the optimum outcome for Ireland.
