Vol. 475 No. 1

Written Answers. - Waste Disposal.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

190 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment his views regarding a media report (details supplied) that the EU Commission is planning to introduce a regulation for the compulsory separation of organic waste by household; the stance or input by him in relation to this matter to date; if he is in favour of such a proposal; and the logistical implications, if any, arising from the introduction of such a proposal. [4405/97]

As this proposal has not yet been presented by the Commission to Council or finalised at Commission level it would not be appropriate to state an Irish Government position on it.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

191 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment the progress, if any, which has been made in developing the regional waste strategy in Connacht, beyond the preliminary stage; and when such a strategy will become effective. [4407/97]

I am aware that a preliminary assessment by way of a desk study for a waste management strategy for Connacht has been carried out on behalf of Galway Corporation and the councils of the counties of Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. The promoting local authorities have not sought grant assistance from my Department in relation to this preliminary phase, but have indicated their intention to do so when the project is further advanced.
