Question:

236 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí assigned to each metropolitan division in the north Dublin city area; and the number assigned to station duty, posts at embassies, Government Departments and other Government buildings, and to patrol duty on a daily basis. [4383/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 235 and 236 together.

The allocation of Garda personnel is the responsibility of the Garda authorities. They have expressed concern, and I share that concern, about supplying the kind of detailed information relating to Garda personnel sought by the Deputy, on the grounds of security and in the interests of crime prevention generally.
However, they have informed me that the Garda personnel strength (all ranks) on 31 January 1997 in each of the five Dublin metropolitan divisions is as follows:
DMA Northern Division 798
DMA North Central Division 539
DMA Southern Division 722
DMA South Central Division 689
DMA Eastern Division 507
