Vol. 475 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Ivor Callely

Question:

246 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of permanent staff in his Department and each State agency under the aegis of his Department; the number of temporary staff; the number of staff on contract; and if Government staffing-embargo guidelines are adhered to in his Department and each State agency in this regard. [4526/97]

The information requested by the Deputy, which represents the position at 31 January 1977, is set out in the following table.

Where two staff are job-sharing a post, either in the Department or in one of the agencies, they are counted as one head of staff.

There are three agencies under the aegis of the Department of the Social Welfare i.e. the Pensions Board, The Combat Poverty Agency and The National Social Services Board. For the purposes of this reply, permanent staff in the agencies of the Department is taken to mean staff on long-term renewable contracts; temporary staff is taken to mean staff who are recruited, for very short periods, from employment agencies etc; and contract staff is taken to mean staff on fixed-term contracts.
The staffing of the Department and of the agencies under its aegis is determined by the needs of the work in accordance with Government policy on civil and public service numbers.

In all cases the total figures are in line with the staffing-embargo Guidelines on Public Sector recruitment set by the Government in June 1995. In addition, Bord Fáilte and CERT regularly recruit, on a seasonal basis, additional staff to deal with seasonally peaked inquiry levels, demand for services etc. The numbers currently stand at 23 for Bord Fáilte and 64 for CERT, who are at present in their peak training period.
