Vol. 475 No. 1

Written Answers. - Department Staff.

Ivor Callely

Question:

290 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the number of permanent staff in his Department and each State agency under the aegis of his Department; the number of temporary staff; the number of staff on contract; and if Government staffing-embargo guidelines are adhered to in his Department and each State agency in this regard. [4529/97]

The following are the up-to-date figures on staff numbers in my Department, including Met Éireann: Permanent, 647, Temporary on Contract, 17; Contract Staff, 9 (Ministerial Appointees).

The Department of Finance has fixed a cap on my Department's numbers which we cannot exceed after 1 July 1997. We are currently within this staffing limit and all staffing decisions taken in my Department are aimed at ensuring that this cap system is adhered to.

The number of staff employed in each State agency under the aegis of my Department can be ascertained from the published accounts and reports which are available in the Dáil Library. Employment levels in these companies are a matter for the companies concerned.
