Vol. 475 No. 1

Written Answers. - Epilepsy Services.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

54 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Health the proposals, if any, there are to address the lack of a specialist assessment unit for persons with epilepsy here other than those services available for the few people who are suitable for surgery; the way in which he proposes to bring those services into line with other countries in the EU; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4323/97]

Limerick East): Epilepsy is treated at primary, secondary and tertiary care levels and a broad range of services exists to cater for persons with this condition. Highly specialised care is available in major acute hospitals with neurology departments or from visiting neurologists.

In a small number of cases it is necessary to have patients sent abroad for treatment. I have recently approved funding for an enhancement of neurology services at Beaumont and the Mater Hospitals which will provide improved services for persons with epilepsy.
