Vol. 475 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ultraviolet Radiation.

Austin Deasy

Question:

75 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Health the health hazards which have arisen due to damage to the ozone layer; and the measures, if any, which are being taken to combat the problem. [4357/97]

Limerick East): Excessive levels of ultraviolet radiation from the sun can cause skin ailments ranging from simple burns to cancer. Damage to the ozone layer can increase exposure to this form of radiation. While measures to prevent damage to the ozone layer fall into the area of environmental policy rather than health policy, protection against the harmful consequences is best achieved by advising the public of the dangers and by encouraging a sensible approach to exposure.

The Meterological Office has arrangements in place to advise the public when excessive levels of ultraviolet radiation may occur, and the Department of Health has produced two public information leaflets, General Health Information for People Travelling Abroad and The Sun Seekers Guide to Health which both provide advice on exposure to the sun.
