Question:

83 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Taoiseach the average percentage of unemployment in each county; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4197/97]

The labour force survey (LFS) provides annual information on the unemployment rate, classified by region. Unfortunately, LFS results are not available for counties. The following table shows the unemployment rate (based on ILO definitions) in each regional authority area, in April 1996:

The five-yearly census of population gives results for counties and smaller areas. The latest results currently available are for 1991. The following table shows 1991 census results for each county on the numbers at work, the numbers unemployed, total labour force and the unemployment rate (based on the principal economic status classification):
