Vol. 475 No. 2

Written Answers. - European Year Against Racism.

Bertie Ahern

Question:

22 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform in view of the fact that the Council of Ministers of the European Union has designated 1997 as the European Year against Racism, the implications, if any, this has for Ireland; and the contributions the Government proposes to make to assist the initiative. [3574/97]

Ireland is participating fully in European Year against Racism which was designated by Resolution of the EU Council of Ministers. I have established a national committee, which has representation from relevant Government Departments and from bodies active in the fight against racism, to co-ordinate activities relating to the year in Ireland. I appointed a representative of the NGO sector to be chairperson of the committee. An allocation of £100,000 has been provided in my Department's Estimate for activities connected with the year.
