Vol. 475 No. 5

Written Answers - Vehicular Parking.

Noel Ahern

Question:

137 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment when section 35 of the Road Traffic Act 1994 will be implemented to restrict the parking of large vehicles in residential areas; when the policy decision was made not to proceed with the making of temporary rules by the Garda Commissioners; if his attention has been drawn to the long delays in getting this restriction on vehicles imposed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5387/97]

I propose to make both the regulations under section 35 and new signs regulations next month. With the commencement of those regulations, the powers vested in the Garda Commissioner to make by-laws and temporary rules under sections 89 and 90 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 will cease. The regulations under section 35 will include a provision for restrictions on the parking of large vehicles. The new traffic signs regulations will provide for the adoption of a traffic sign appropriate to the proposed restriction. In the context of the imminent introduction of the new regulations, the making of temporary rules by the Garda Síochána would not be appropriate.
