Vol. 475 No. 5

Written Answers - Schools Building Projects.

Robert Molloy

Question:

147 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in approving the development of a modern language, science laboratory and a library at Kylemore secondary school, County Galway. [3924/97]

I am aware that, some time ago, an application was received in the planning and building unit of my Department from Kylemore Abbey secondary school, County Galway for classroom accommodation.

While the application was being considered, the school authorities proceeded with the works, which consist mainly of general classroom accommodation.

In such circumstances, where building works are undertaken by school authorities without the prior written approval of my Department, capital funding is not provided by my Department.

I would like to point out that no application has been received from the school in relation to the provision of specialist classroom accommodation.

If such an application is made it will be given consideration by my Department.
