Written Answers - Teacher Appointments.

James McDaid

Question:

31 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for Education the number of remedial teachers to be appointed to primary and second level schools in 1997. [5155/97]

Tony Killeen

Question:

74 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to appoint additional remedial teachers in primary and post primary schools in County Clare. [4633/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 31 and 74 together.

I have no plans at present to appoint additional remedial teachers to primary or second level schools. Remedial teacher posts are allocated on the basis of priority of need as determined by my Department following the collection and analysis of data from schools by my Department's inspectorate. The allocation of such posts is also subject to resource availability in any given year.

Since my appointment as Minister for Education, I have allocated an additional 241 remedial teachers to primary schools and 98 remedial teachers to post-primary schools. A total of 1,188 remedial teachers are now in place at primary level and 350 at post-primary level.

As Minister for Education, I have to consider how best to deploy available resources across a wide range of special needs. I have to determine priorities and try to allocate resources to best effect.

In the current year, I have adopted a particular focus on children who suffer from educational disadvantage. I have sought to target resources into this area in an effort to break the cycle of disadvantage. As part of this approach, I recently launched a major new initiative aimed at bringing special targeted assistance to children in selected urban and rural areas who suffer serious educational disadvantage.

I am satisfied that since my appointment as Minister for Education I have achieved substantial advances across the entire spectrum of special needs, including the remedial area. It is my intention to continue this process.

When I am next in a position to extend the remediation service, the needs of all schools, including schools in County Clare, will be given every consideration.

Máirín Quill

Question:

32 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education the number of remedial teachers in schools in the North Tipperary area. [5179/97]

Mary Harney

Question:

75 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Education the number of schools at primary level which do not have access to a remedial teacher on a county by county basis. [5191/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 32 and 75 together.

A total of 18 ex-quota remedial teacher posts have been allocated to primary schools in the North Tipperary area. A further nine remedial teachers have been allocated to post-primary schools in the area.

There are approximately 3,200 primary schools in the country, of which 921 do not currently have access to a remedial teaching service.
Details of the 921 schools in question, on a county basis, are in the form of a tabular statement which will be circulated with the Official Report.
