Vol. 475 No. 5

Written Answers - Psychological Service.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

59 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Education the number of educational psychologists to be appointed in 1997; the regions in which these psychologists will be appointed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5153/97]

Recruitment of staff by my Department in 1997 must be within the limits of the Department's administrative budget for the year and in the context of the Government's framework and policy on employment in the public sector. Further recruitment in 1997 by my Department of inspectors of guidance-psychological service is not envisaged at present.

My policy, as outlined in the White Paper on Education, states that the psychological service to schools will be expanded further as a function of the education boards.
