Vol. 475 No. 6

Written Answers. - Green Pound Revaluation.

Joe Walsh

Question:

151 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he proposes to make matching Exchequer funds available in the payment of compensation for recent green pound revaluations; and if so, the amount involved. [5522/97]

The European Commission proposal for the payment of compensation for recent revaluations has only recently been submitted to Council and the earliest practicable time for the Council to adopt the proposal is at the meeting fixed for 17-19 March. The amount of EU funding proposed for Ireland for the first year is 62 MECU, approximately £50 million.

At this stage no decision has yet been taken to supplement the EU compensation with national funding.
