Written Answers. - Arrest Warrants.

Liam Hyland

Question:

36 Mr. Hyland asked the Minister for Justice the number of unexecuted warrants for arrest currently outstanding in the State; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5438/97]

Martin Cullen

Question:

52 Mr. Cullen asked the Minister for Justice the number of unexecuted warrants in the country. [5419/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 36 and 52 together.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that to obtain information of the nature sought by the Deputies would involve expenditure of an inordinate amount of Garda time and resources which could not be justified at this time. I understand, however, that the Garda authorities compile information on an annual basis in relation to outstanding penal warrants. The Deputies may wish to note that details of unexecuted penal warrants, which the Garda authorities had on hand, at the end of each year from 1992 to 1995 are as follows:

Date

Warrants on hand

Face Value

£

31 December 1992

47,117

6,292,106

31 December 1993

47,862

4,880,247

31 December 1994

88,480

9,390,639

31 December 1995

40,111

5,092,708

Details in respect of unexecuted penal warrants for 1996 are being collated at present by the Garda authorities and are expected to be available in April.
With regard to the number of warrants awaiting issue in District Court offices the position is that statistics are compiled in relation to penal warrants only. Details of such warrants for the years 1992 to 1995 are as follows:

Date

Numbers awaiting issue

Face Value

£

31 December 1992

32,270

3,463,874

31 December 1993

28,638

2,625,647

31 December 1994

21,646

1,983,031

31 December 1995

17,613

1,701,706

Details in respect of penal warrants on hands at 31 December 1996 are being complied at present.
