Vol. 475 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Ivor Callely

Question:

39 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the number of personnel and motor vehicles available in the Garda stations in Coolock, Clontarf, Raheny, Santry, Whitehall and Fitzgibbon Street; if her attention has been drawn to difficulties in offering adequate policing to the station catchment areas; her understanding of the situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5305/97]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda resources and personnel to different areas. They have expressed concern, and I share that concern, about supplying the kind of detailed information relating to Garda personnel sought by the Deputy, on the grounds of security and in the interests of crime prevention generally.

However, I propose to give the Deputy the details he requires relating to personnel and mobile units on a district basis. The district strength figures incorporate all ranks, are valid for 31 January 1997 and are as follows:

District Headquarters

District Strength (all ranks as of 31/1/97)

Number of Mobile Units in District

Coolock

179

16

Raheny

150

15

Santry

218

28

Fitzgibbon Street

199

17

I am assured by the Garda authorities that they are satisfied with the allocation of Garda resources to the sub-districts concerned and the policing service that is offered from these sub-districts.
