Vol. 475 No. 6

Written Answers. - Ministerial Transport.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

77 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Justice the number and cost of ministerial cars in service from 1 January 1996 to 31 December 1996. [5442/97]

There are 47 cars in the ministerial fleet at present. Twenty eight of these cars are permanently assigned to the Taoiseach, Tánaiste, Government Ministers, the Chief Whip and the Minister of State to the Government, the President, former President, former Taoisigh, Director of Public Prosecutions, Chief Justice, Attorney General and the Ceann Comhairle. Nineteen vehicles are not specifically allocated to individuals and are used when vehicles are undergoing repairs, maintenance, etc.

Thirteen new vehicles were purchased for the ministerial fleet in 1996 at a cost of £438,725. Some of the existing cars went into the spare fleet and some of the older cars were disposed of. It is estimated that the running cost of the fleet in 1996, including petrol, service, maintenance and repairs was approximately £225,000. This figure does not include the cost of Garda drivers who work on a week-on-week-off basis.
