Vol. 475 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Dispute.

Mary Wallace

Question:

180 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the current position in relation to the 80 leaving certificate students who are attending a post-primary school (details supplied) in County Louth, whose parents are worried about a threatened strike by the teachers and the resignation of four members of the board of management, both matters apparently related to a recent teacher appointment; the steps, if any, her Department has taken to resolve the issue in view of the worry it is causing to parents and students at this time of year; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5986/97]

I am aware of the position in the school in question. I appreciate the concern of the parents and pupils. My Department is monitoring the situation. However, the resolution of the dispute is a matter, in the first instance, for the management of the school and the teacher union involved. I understand that a facilitator has been appointed and that discussions are ongoing between the facilitator and the parties concerned with a view to an early resolution of the dispute. It would not be appropriate for me to intervene at this time.
