Vol. 475 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Noel Treacy

Question:

181 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Justice the opening hours of every Garda station in the country; the plans, if any, she has to change any opening hours in the near future; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6276/97]

The opening hours of individual Garda stations is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have expressed concern, and I share that concern, about providing the kind of detailed information sought by the Deputy on the grounds of security and in the interest of crime prevention generally.

However, I can inform the Deputy that all Garda divisional and district headquarters and certain other stations are open on a 24 hour basis. The opening hours of all other stations are determined by local divisional officers based on the policing requirements of the area.

The policing needs of individual areas, including the opening hours of Garda stations, are regularly reviewed by the Garda authorities with a view to providing the best possible service to the public.
