John O'Donoghue

Question:

199 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Justice the number of murders or suspected murders; the number of detections in each of the past five years in this regard; and the number of cases in which there was a common perpetrator for two or more offences. [6321/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the available information requested by the Deputy is as follows:

No. of murders

No. of detections

1995

32

1994

25

20

1993

1992

1991

Final figures for 1996 are not yet available but the provisional figure is 41.
I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the information sought relating to the perpetration of two or more offences by the same individual is not readily available and could only be obtained by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of Garda time and resources.
