Vol. 475 No. 8

Written Answers. - Functions of Semi-State Bodies.

David Andrews

Question:

223 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade his views on the fact that, as currently organised, there is an unnecessary overlap between the brief and functions of Bord Fáilte and the National Tourism Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6078/97]

The brief and functions of Bord Fáilte and the Tourism Council are distinct and quite separate.

Bord Fáilte is an executive agency, and the statutory body with primary responsibility for promoting and developing tourist traffic in and to the State in accordance with the Tourist Traffic Acts, 1931-1995.

The Tourism Council, on the other hand, acts, as a national forum for consultation with the tourism industry and in an advisory capacity to me on tourism policy and its implementation by the State agencies.
