Vol. 476 No. 3

Written Answers. - Glanmire (Cork) Community College.

Máirín Quill

Question:

111 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education the catchment area for the new community college in Glanmire, County Cork; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that students from a number of primary schools in the area now find themselves excluded from admission to that school; the investigations, if any, she has made into the matter; and the action, if any, she proposes to take in this regard. [7049/97]

The Deputy will be aware that in 1993, I approved the provision of a new second level school in Glanmire to operate as a community college under the aegis of County Cork vocational education committee. The school building will be completed and ready to open next September.

I am aware that the parents' associations of a number of primary schools in the area are anxious that these schools would be included in the official catchment area of the new community college to improve the chances of access for their children to the school. An official from the planning section of my Department will meet representatives of the parents' associations of the schools concerned and other relevant parties shortly to discuss this matter.

The drawing up of a catchment area for the college will be finalised when these discussions are completed.
