Written Answers. - Forestry Premium.

Joe Walsh

Question:

161 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry when he will fulfil the commitment of the Government in Programme 2000 to increase the premium rates payable to farmers for forestry development; and if he will pay the maximum rates permissible under EU regulations. [7058/97]

In furtherance of the Government aim to improve the level of forestry premium payable to farmers, as set out in Partnership 2000, my Department has commissioned an independent study in this regard. The results of the study are expected to be available within a few weeks after which my Department will have discussions with the European Commission in the matter.
