Vol. 476 No. 3

Written Answers. - Customer Charters.

Máirín Quill

Question:

26 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications his views on the introduction of an ESB type customer charter by all of the semi-State companies under the aegis of his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6925/97]

Primary responsibility for the introduction of customer charters rests with the semi-State companies. My colleague, Deputy Doyle, as Minister of State at my Department, has special responsibility for customers of public services and was the driving force behind the code of practice for the delivery of services to customers of commercial State companies which was published in January 1997. This code sets out minimum standards which participating companies have committed themselves to comply with. Companies are free to publish their own customer charters which specifically cater to their own customers' needs while meeting the requirements of the more general code of practice.
