Vol. 476 No. 4

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention.

Ben Briscoe

Question:

104 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Justice if she will have investigations made into the growing incidence of car thefts and vandalism against cars in an area (details supplied) in Dublin 8; and if she will have arrangements made to make extra gardaí available on foot patrol in the south inner city to combat the high crime rates. [7196/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that since 1 January 1997 there has been a small number of larcenies from vehicles recorded for the area in question, the majority of which have been detected. In the majority of cases, damage was caused to windows or locks of cars during the commission of crimes.

The area is patrolled by members on foot patrol from Kevin Street Station, by mobile patrols and by task force and plain clothes units. Furthermore, on 1 April 1997 the tourist initiative for the area will become operative and this will result in increased foot patrols.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that the area will continue to receive appropriate Garda attention.
