Vol. 476 No. 4

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

137 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the proposals, if any, he has for the disposal of dead farm animals in view of new conditions for the disposal of cattle and the increased cost to the farmer of transporting them to the rendering plant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7319/97]

With the introduction of the Order on specified offal material on 21 February, it is now necessary for the skulls, eyes and spinal cords of sheep and cattle to be rendered in a dedicated plant. In circumstances where it is not possible to remove these organs or parts, the whole animal must be rendered. At present the approved plant is accepting material from knackeries at a very attractive commercial rate and is currently looking at ways of reducing transportation costs for product being delivered to Monery.
