Vol. 476 No. 4

Written Answers. - Naval Service Patrol Vessels.

Ivor Callely

Question:

146 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence his views on the condition of our naval fleet; the recommendations, if any, he has received in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7202/97]

The Naval Service fleet consists of seven all-weather patrol vessels. These undergo regular planned maintenance `and repair to ensure maximum availability to meet operational requirements.

In this context European Union fishery protection programmes have facilitated certain planned maintenance and refitting to extend the service life of the vessels on a part-cost recoupment basis. Two vessels, LE Deirdre and LE Emer, have been refurbished in recent years. Refurbishment work on LE Aoife will be completed in April 1997 and will commence on LE Aisling shortly afterwards. The remaining vessels are due to undergo refitting in the period 1998-2000.

I am satisfied that the maintenance arrangements outlined are fully adequate.
