Vol. 476 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin Bay Proposals.

Ivor Callely

Question:

10 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine the developments he proposes for Dublin Bay over the next five years; the concerns, if any, that have been drawn to his attention; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7029/97]

As the Minister for the Marine I am interested in any developments in Dublin Bay which relate to maritime transport, the functioning of ports, the fishing industry, the marine environment, the safety of life at sea, the state foreshore and marine leisure and tourism.

As the Deputy will appreciate the Department of the Marine has little if any role in directly undertaking development. The Deputy can be assured however that I will adopt a positive attitude to any development proposals which are to the advantage of the residents and economy of the Dublin Bay area while protecting its unique heritage and environment.

In particular, as the Deputy will understand, I am of the view that the marine leisure and tourism potential of Dublin Bay, including Dún Laoghaire, is substantial and I will do my best to support and encourage developments in that sector.
