Question:

109 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the provision of free legal aid for south Tipperary; the proposals, if any, he has to extend the service and to provide a centre in south Tipperary; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7603/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 108 and 109 together.

The Legal Aid Board does not maintain its records in a manner that would make possible, without the allocation of a disproportionate amount of the board's administrative resources, the provision of information on the number of people from south Tipperary who applied to its law centres for legal aid or advice, or on the number of applicants from that area whose requests for services from the law centres in the years 1992-6 were successful.
A part-time law centre is operated by the Legal Aid Board in the Citizen's Information Centre at 14 Wellington Street, Clonmel. This service is provided by a solicitor from the full-time law centre in Nenagh and is available on the first, second and third Monday of every month. The quality of the service provided by the board is kept under constant review and action is taken, where necessary, to meet particular demand, subject of course to budgetary constraints. At present, I have no plans to expand Legal Aid Board services in south Tipperary to provide a full-time centre there.
