Question:

153 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the dangerous condition of the prefab classroom at a school (details supplied) in County Galway; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that the teacher taking the class in this room has to wear an overcoat and scarf during the cold weather; and the action, if any, she intends to take in this regard. [7382/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 152 and 153 together. I am aware of the condition of the prefab classroom at the school referred to by the Deputy, I included a project for the extension and refurbishment of this school in my Department's capital programme. All of the planning work is now complete and the project is ready for tender.

At present, I am dealing with a significant backlog of projects arising out of the massive cuts in the capital funding of primary schools in the 1988 period and, due to budgetary constraints, it is not possible for me to release all deserving projects to tender and contract together. I hope to release a number of projects to tender and contract on a phased basis later this year and the school will receive every consideration at the time.
