Micheál Martin

Question:

190 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the number of early start projects currently in place throughout the country. [7711/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 189 and 190 together.

The cost of funding the early start pre-school programme amounted to nearly £884,000 in 1996. A sum of £932,000 has been set aside in the 1997 provision to fund the programme. All funding of early start projects comes from the Exchequer.

At present, a total of 56 pre-school units have been established in 40 national schools embracing 1,680 pupils in areas of disadvantage.
