Vol. 476 No. 5

Written Answers - School Placement.

Mary Wallace

Question:

199 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the immediate steps, if any, she will take to address the teaching needs of a pupil (details supplied) in County Louth who is unable to obtain a place in the local special school in view of the fact that this school is no longer taking pupils despite the fact that this particular pupil continues to attend his local primary school without the benefit of the recommended resource teacher who would provide him with an opportunity of continuing at his local primary school which is his preferred option; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7755/97]

My attention has been drawn to the difficulties surrounding the placement of the child in question in the local special school. I assure the Deputy that every effort is being made by my Department to resolve this matter. I am not in a position at present to provide a resource teacher to the primary school in question.

Ten resource teacher posts were recently allocated by my Department to schools in the primary sector. These posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need following the collection and analysis of data from primary schools by my Department's primary inspectorate.

The special educational needs of the pupils attending the primary school in question, together with the need of all other primary schools, will be considered in the context of any future allocation of such posts.
