54 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Taoiseach the average price for diesel and petrol for each month from March 1996 to date in 1997. [7198/97]

National average retail prices for leaded petrol, unleaded petrol and auto diesel are available from the compilation of the consumer price index, CPI. Hitherto, the CPI has been compiled in respect of mid-February, mid-May, mid-August and mid-November each year. It is being compiled on a monthly basis from January 1997 onwards.

The national average prices per litre for mid-February 1996, mid-May 1996, mid-August 1996, mid-November 1996 and mid-January 1997 were:
