Vol. 476 No. 6

Written Answers. - State Banking Sector.

Ivor Callely

Question:

62 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the Government's current policy on State banking houses; the position in relation to institutions (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the current considerations in respect of these banks. [7837/97]

I would refer the Deputy to a similar question from him, Question No. 76, which I answered on Wednesday, 5 March 1997, concerning the restructuring of the State banking sector. As I stated at that time, there are a number of options available, each of which would have varying impacts on the objective of improving competition, securing employment and delivering cost-effective, customer-based services. This complex matter is still under consideration and no final decision has been reached on a preferred option.
