Vol. 476 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tax Yield.

Ivor Callely

Question:

65 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the yield from travel tax paid by Irish citizens travelling abroad in 1996; the travel tax charges imposed in 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7841/97]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the excise duty yield from Irish travel tax in the year 1996 was £12.6 million.

Ireland introduced excise duty on foreign travel in 1982 and it is currently chargeable at £5 per ticket. Other states, including the United Kingdom, may also impose travel taxes affecting Irish travellers.
