Vol. 476 No. 6

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Brendan Smith

Question:

97 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for the Environment if an application has been made for funding from the Cohesion Fund for a scheme (details supplied); if so, the projects which are included in this scheme; the current stage of each project; when the European Commission will give a response; and the projects which will go to tender or commence in 1997. [7850/97]

A Cohesion Fund application in respect of the Erne catchment water management scheme was submitted to the European Commission in December 1994 but no decision has been received to date. Schemes which are at various stages of planning and which are included in stage 1 of the application are as follows:

Lough Gowna regional water supply; Ballybay sewerage; Clones sewerage; Lough Gowna sewerage; Cootehill sewerage; Belturbet sewerage; Cavan sewerage scheme extension; and Cavan sewerage sludge treatment.

These schemes cannot be advanced until approval to the Cohesion application is received from the European Commission or until another source of funding is identified. In view of the high level of commitments under the water and sewerage programme, I cannot say when it may be possible to provide alternative funding.

Ballyconnell sewerage scheme was also included in stage 1 of the application, but is now being funded under the INTERREG programme and is currently under construction. Cavan sewerage scheme — phosphorous removal, is also included in the work programme for 1997 and is being funded directly by the Exchequer. The scheme is at the planning stage and is expected to go to construction this year.
