Vol. 476 No. 7

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Tony Gregory

Question:

208 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Environment the type of works which may be carried out by the local authority on flats complexes selected under the funds provided for estate improvement; and if such items as window replacement and central heating installation will be approved by his Department. [8185/97]

The reply to Question No. 10 of 25 February 1997 outlines the categories of works eligible for funding under the estate improvement programme which is confined to certain housing estates identified by the five major local authorities to whom allocations under the programme have been made.

The management, maintenance and improvement of existing dwellings including the replacement of defective windows and the provision of central heating is the responsibility of local authorities, to be financed from their own resources. However, where funding is provided, under the remedial works scheme, to assist local authorities in carrying out major structural works to designated housing estates, the installation of new windows or central heating may be included as part of such works.
