243 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the EU funding received by her Department in 1996; the funding which she expects to receive in 1997; and the relevant funds and budget lines under which such funding is received. [8019/97]
Aid from the European Social Fund is made available to my Department to assist in the provision of specific services across the first, second and third levels of education. These services are provided through schools, vocational education committees, regional technical colleges, the Dublin Institute of Technology and the universities. The overall cost of the programmes is provided in the annual estimates for grants to these institutions.
In 1996 my Department received £120,219,454 in aid from the European Social Fund. A sum of £25,500 was also received in grants under the SOCRATES Programme. In addition to EU payments made to my Department, agencies and institutions in the education sector also receive funding directly for projects under SOCRATES, LEONARDO, Youth for Europe and Community Initiatives.
The programmes funded by my Department and the associated EU receipts in 1996 and expected receipts in 1997 are listed in the following table. Receipts from the European Regional Development Fund in respect of my Department's capital programme are drawn down by the Department of Finance.
